A Christmas tradition
Contributed by: Donna Williams on 11/30/2006

Larry Williams was a 15-year-old boy living in South Denver with his parents and two sisters. In 1955, he helped his dad make and put up a Christmas display in front of their home. Just a string or two of colored lights, three reindeer and the side view of Santa's sleigh and, of course, Santa. Santa with his hand raised waving hello to the children on their way to school, just a half a block away.

The next year, 1956,two more reindeer were added and the sleigh could hold his little sisters. A cardboard fireplace and the words "Merry Christmas" in cardboard also were attached to the garage. Larry received an honorable mention in the Denver lighting contest in the child's division.

Fifty years later, a wife, four children, six grandchildren and of course a different home. In 1972, he placed third in the adult division and received a $25 bond from the Public Service Co. and city of Westminster. The number of Christmas figures are now up to 103. The same Santa, sleigh and reindeer, now up to nine (can't forget Rudolph with a flashing nose). All the figures are handmade, hand painted and made of plywood. There are so many they have run over into their daughter's yard, too. Daughter, Cary; son-in-law, Vince; and grandson, NIC help for one week to set it out for all to enjoy. Please drive by and take a look at 7500 & 7510 Winona Court. Santa still waves a hello to the children as they go to school just around the corner.
