On Aug 6 the Adams County Fair had their 4-H beef show. After their showing, elected officials were paired up with a 4-H person and their animal. Mayor
McNally
was paired up with
Brad Barber
and
Fionna
. Fionna is a Hereford, lives in Bennett, eats 10 pounds of grain andtwo pounds of hay a day.
Last year, the Charity Beef Show winner was Mayor
Kathy Novak
from Northglenn. Mayor Nancy McNally from Westminster won this year's competition.
The 4-H person shared with us what they do each and every day with their animal(s). Brad had brought one steer for show that died shortly after weigh-in. He himself was still recovering from a recent brain tumor that had been removed two days before his16th birthday.
We all laughed a lot. Some of the elected officials had baby cows. Brad told me that was worse than having a grown cow or steer because the babies miss their mom and haven't learned how to be led like the ones we were showing.
The show is a lot of fun. It was my third year to compete. We had mayors, commissioners, the sheriff, senators, legislators and
John Lefebvre
, Adams County treasurer, compete.
Roper, the sponsor of the event, also gave a cash award to the winner. Mayor McNally will be donating her earnings to the Westminster Armed Forces Tribute Garden that will be located at City Park in Westminster. The city currently is asking donors to consider adopting a specific item and work as a group to fund it or donate individually.
There are all levels for giving and some examples are engraved bricks, $100-$175; trees, $350; flag poles, $1,500; ornamental covered seating areas $50,000; 1-3 footmaquettes, $1,000, $5,000 and $7,500; bronze sculptures for the service branches, $100,000; and the centerpiece fountain, $350,000.
