Kyffin Elementary Named First Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge Winner

Kyffin Elementary School in Golden, Colorado will be awarded the very first Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge award of $1000 on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008 at 10 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Principal Valerie Braginetz, physical education teacher Candy Pulst and close to 600 Kyffin students will be on hand to accept the award. The Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge award, which recognizes schools that are working to create a healthy atmosphere, will be presented by CBS4, KCNC-TV-Denver, America on the Move, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Colorado and HealthONE's Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.

The Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge recognizes schools that are working to create a healthy atmosphere within their schools by coming up with creative and innovative ways to keep students and faculty healthy. Kyffin Elementary School was selected as the inaugural winner because the staff agreed to increase the school day by 10 minutes each day so that all students could enjoy a physical education rotation. For the first time this year, kindergarteners attend P.E. classes. In addition, the school has introduced new programs including a "Healthy Nuts" curriculum for second graders to help students learn about healthy snack choices. Parent volunteers also walk around the cafeteria with healthy choice sampling trays each week offering students tastes of fruits and vegetables.

"I am proud to share that the Jeffco School curriculum has been reworked to include a focus on healthy lifestyles, nutrition, physical education and incorporating movement into everyday life. Our art, music and physical education teachers now work closely together to create integrated lessons that keep our students minds and bodies active," Kyffin Principal Valerie Braginetz said.

The Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge is an ongoing program. Nomination forms are available at http://cbs4denver.com/fit4colorado and can be submitted through April 30, 2009. One school is selected each month to receive this recognition award that includes a $1,000 donation towards the program being recognized.
