Contributed by: Westminster Optimist on 5/4/2008

Each year, the Westminster Optimist Club provides two scholarships to Adams County School District 50 graduating seniors. Students interested in earning the scholarships were interviewed by a panel of Optimist members. This year, the scholarships were awarded to students in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Program. Winners of the $2,000 scholarships were selected based on academic achievement in the classroom, leadership, citizenship, and attendance. Recipient of the 2008 Mary Lou Zarlengo Memorial Scholarship was Karissa Lynn Saunders, Ranum High School. Recipient of the 2008 Warren Fair Scholarship was Heather Belvill, Westminster High School.

Karissa Lynn Saunders,
daughter of Gregory Blindauer and Samantha Saunders, granddaughter of Lucille Blindauer, and a student at Ranum High School, is a member of the AVID program. She has taken Advanced Placement classes in English, Advanced World Literature, and Biology. She is a member of the National Honor Society, earned the President's Award and is a member of the Air Force ROTC, where she served in a leadership position, participated in the drill team and color guard. Her interests outside of school include helping with Special Olympics, the Have a Heart Program and Elks Lodge activities. Karissa plans to major in Biology at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

Heather Belvill, daughter of Paul and Judy Belvill, and a student at Westminster High School is a member of the AVID program and is on the Honor Roll. She is a member of the Future Farmers of America and with a team of four students took first place in a floral design at state and third place at a national event in Indiana. She is also interested in drama and dance. During her after-school hours, Heather has worked for six months at Wendy's as a cashier, then seven months at Lakeside, and four months at the Comfort Inn.
