Citizens complete fire academy
On 5/29/2008
Contributed by: Westminster Fire Department on 6/3/2008

The second Westminster Fire Department Citizen Academy graduated on Thursday, May 29. The 24 participants dedicated every Thursday evening for 13 weeks to learn about the fire department. The course included hands-on opportunities like climbing aerials, donning SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus), a ride-along and CPR certification. The purpose of the class is to give citizens the opportunity to learn about the services the department provides the public, discover the procedural why's and practical how's behind firefighting and emergency medical services, and learn some useful safety information. Alumni of the Westminster Fire Department Citizen Academy often use their new knowledge as volunteers for department events. There is no cost to take the Academy, however the class presented a $350 donation for the Westminster Firefighters Fire Victims Benefit Fund to Public Education Officer Sherrie Leeka as a token of their appreciation. The next citizen academy will begin in March of 2009; applications will be available at www.ci.westminster.co.us/fire in December.
