On Sunday, August 19, thirty blue-shirted volunteers from Democrats Work (
www.democratswork.org) and the Broomfield Dems joined forces with all three Democratic candidates vying for the 2nd Congressional District seat now held by Mark Udall to cleanup the Field open space in Broomfield.
Jared Polis, Will Shafroth, and
State Senator Joan Fitz-Gerald and their supporters got their hands dirty weeding flowerbeds around the Brunner Farmhouse and removing trash and debris from The Field. Broomfield City Council candidate
Judy Enderle and her supporters were there to help as well.
Democrats Work, which is leading a national effort to get Democrats involved in community service, partners with Democratic organizations throughout Colorado to help connect Democratic volunteers with service projects in their communities. Together, Democrats Work and the Broomfield Dems have adopted The Field and are responsible for maintaining the open space throughout the year. In addition, this year Democrats Work has helped mobilize Colorado Democrats to clean up trails and parks, plant trees, and help a park ranger remove an old fence in Arapahoe County, and volunteer at the Wellness Fair in Broomfield County. Upcoming events include planting trees in Villa Park (August 25) and painting out graffiti in metro Denver (September 9).
"We're committed to building a new type of politics - a politics of service - that puts Democratic values into action, gets people involved, and gets our hands dirty . . . in a good way," said Erin Egan, Colorado Director of Democrats Work. "This project served as a great opportunity for voters to get to know all of the candidates running for Congress as they dig up weeds and dig for votes. It is also a great way for all of us to showcase Democratic values. This is more than just a one day project. We will continue to demonstrate to our neighbors that Democrats get things done in our communities year-round."
