More than 90 Girl Scouts from 13 Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadette troops in the Dry Creek Service Unit of Mile Hi Council spent a morning recently completing eight different service projects for area agencies during their annual Day of Giving at Broomfield United Methodist Church.
The girls came together to tie 35 fleece blankets for Project Linus. Blankets from Dry Creek Service Unit were being used to replenish blankets sent to Hurricane Katrina, Rita and Wilma victims. Project Linus has a two-fold mission: to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need of gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer “blanketeers;” and to provide a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities, for the benefit of children.
Scouts also made 100 foam ornaments and painted 80 glass ornaments, and everyone brought non-perishable food items to be donated to Broomfield FISH. The Broomfield FISH Organization operates a 24-hour volunteer service providing emergency food, housing, transportation, information and referral, rent and utility payments, bus fare, basic household furniture, medical prescriptions and case work services to help families achieve self-sufficiency.
Girls decorated 20 breakfast bags for Project Angel Heart. Project Angel Heart supplies meals for people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses in Denver and Colorado Springs. Scouts helped decorate and attach 100 Teddy Bear tags to bears for the Child Rescue Foundation. The Child Rescue Foundation works with many other agencies across the Front Range which aid children in crisis.
Older scouts made 39 sets of four gift cards for senior citizens to use. Girls also decorated holiday and birthday cards for seniors.
Girls learned new songs and snacked on Girl Scout cookies, candy canes and hot cocoa during breaks.
