On February 7, 2008 at 4:45 pm, three juvenile males, ages 8 to 10, were playing football on the field of Zerger Elementary located at 9050 Field Street. As they left to walk home, they crossed the street in front of Kings Mill Pool at 9018 Field Street, and continued westbound on the path.
A yellow truck, southbound on Field Street, passed the children as they crossed and made a gesture with his finger that the children described as a "U". The driver made a u-turn, exited his vehicle, and ran approximately 11 feet after the children. He then stopped, started talking on his cell phone, and returned to the truck according to the children.
As the children approached Sommerset Park at 9290 W. 90th Drive, they saw the same vehicle stop in the parking lot. The driver again exited his vehicle, chased the children approximately 10 to 20 feet, and then returned to his vehicle and drove away.
The children went to a nearby home and asked for help. They were taken to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran School at 8997 W. 88th Avenue, where they are students.
The Westminster Police Department is asking for help in locating this vehicle and its driver. The vehicle is described as a newer model yellow Chevy truck with a paper license plate in the window. The driver is described as a Hispanic or white male, approximately 5-10 with an athletic build. If you see this vehicle, please call the Westminster Communication Center at (303)430-2400 extension 5.
Parents are reminded to take this opportunity to reinforce safe behaviors with their children. Tell your child to always walk with a friend, and to be aware of their surroundings. If a stranger approaches, be sure that your child knows what to do: yell or shout, run away and immediately tell an adult. Impress upon your child the importance of going straight to school and coming home immediately after dismissal, or leaving the bus stop. Review your family safety plans and what you do to keep your home safe. Together, we can keep our students safe
