The Westminster Firefighters Fire Victims Benefit Fund, commonly called the
Burn Fund, is a nonprofit organized by the Westminster Fire Department to enable firefighters to financially aid community members in need. Though the Burn Fund is primarily used to offer immediate assistance to victims of fires, the board may also opt to support Westminster citizens, employees and families of fallen firefighters.
When Westminster Fire Department emergency medical crews responded to a serious motorcycle accident in October 2007, they were saddened to learn the injured party was fellow City of Westminster employee
Zachary Neumann. On April 23, Westminster firefighters who provided Zachary with emergency medical care presented him a check for $300 to assist with medical and rehabilitation expenses. "I'm thankful we have the Burn Fund so we can offer people some help," said Capt.
Rick Barker, "It's tough to care for people in tragic accidents and fires, but at least we can give them some monetary aid when they really need it."
Westminster firefighters raise money for the nonprofit fund with the support of local businesses and organizations. Recent Burn Fund supporters include the
Rock Bottom Brewery (Fire Chief Ale fundraising events), the
Westminster Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association ($1000 of the proceeds from a Police/Fire hockey game and Avs game fundraiser), and
Performance Chiropractic (offered a week of free consultations with a donation to the Burn Fund). The new
Gaslight Theater is also going to donate a portion of proceeds from their summer children's theater performances. The Municipal Court Generous Juror program is another revenue source. Of course, Westminster Fire Department and city employees donate to the nonprofit, including paycheck deductions that go straight to the Burn Fund, volunteer support of fundraising events, and cash, item or service donations to Burn Fund fundraisers.
