Juggling several things at once isn't a problem for
Christine McNulty. The 17-year-old recently won the titles of Colorado 3 Baton Grand Champion, Senior Solo Champion and Senior 2 Baton Champion at the 2008 Colorado Baton Twirling Championships, held April 27 at Ranum High School. The competition was sponsored by the Colorado Baton Council and sanctioned by the U.S. Twirling Association.
Solo is a demanding event in which an athlete uses one baton that is rolled, flipped and tossed around the body and through the air. 2 Baton and 3 Baton are highly difficult events in which multiple batons must be kept moving at all times.
McNulty was seven years old when she started baton twirling classes through the Westminster Parks and Recreation Department, where she is now an assistant teacher with coach Cheryl Osborn.
"Christine is a talented twirler and a great role model for our younger athletes," said Osborn. "She shows the girls that they can have fun, work hard and reach their goals."
Baton twirling is just one of McNulty's accomplishments. The soon-to-be graduate of Standley Lake High School is a Valedictorian of the Class of 2008, an AP Scholar, and a member of National Honor Society, as well as a peer counselor. She was also first chair flute in the school's Wind Ensemble and in the Jefferson County Honor Band.
McNulty will attend the University of Colorado at Boulder this fall. She is the daughter of Dan and Dina McNulty.
