Officials with the Adams County Housing Authority say the recent acquisition of the Terrace Gardens apartment complex will help in an effort to revitalize the south Westminster area.
The Adams County Housing Authority (ACHA), which owns and operates more than 1,200 apartment units in Adams County, announced the acquisition of Terrace Garden Apartments in August. The authority will take over the apartment complex, located at 72nd and Federal, and apply more rigid screening criteria and rules for its tenants, said
Donald May
, Executive Director of ACHA.
The apartment complex has been a source of frequent police activity in the past, May said.
"We're excited to welcome Terrace Gardens to our growing portfolio," May said in a statement. "We think south Westminster is well situated for job and population growth in the face of the future commuter rail expansion. We are excited to help stabilize the property in the short term, and at the prospect of offering workforce housing opportunities along the future commuter rail lines."
In addition, the housing authority also purchased the old Arrow Motel building, which currently is boarded up. ACHA plans to locate their offices in the abandoned row of buildings, May said.
"There also will be retail space some offices there," he said.
The authority hopes to break ground on the new offices in spring 2009. The effort is part of the city's plan to revitalize the area, which soon will see the opening of a new Rancho Liborio market.
The market, which caters primarily to Hispanic and Latino shoppers, is scheduled to open this fall.
