Westminster Fire receives Homeland Security grant
Contributed by: Westminster Fire Department on 1/24/2008

The Westminster Fire Department is pleased to announce they have received a grant from the United States Department of Homeland Security, Office of Domestic Preparedness, under the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.

The primary goal of the grant is to provide assistance to meet firefighting and emergency response needs. Westminster applied for just under $103,100 to replace firefighting hose, nozzles, and air bottles for self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) with the department providing a 30% match. The AFG program has awarded $72,160 to the Westminster Fire Department; the department provides the remainder of the funding, which was already a 2008 budget line-item.

Much of the fire department's hose and nozzle inventory is over 20 years old, resulting in increased maintenance costs and performance failures. The grant enables the WFD to purchase 13,000 ft. of hose ($70,870), 15 nozzles and 3 monitors ($20,520), and 13 SCBA Bottles ($11,700) -- enough to replace all sections of older hose and nozzles, and reach the amount of SCBA bottles recommended for inventory levels.

"The department tries hard to leverage funding," said Westminster Fire Chief Jim Cloud. "We appreciate all the community support we get, and feel a responsibility to stretch our dollars as much as possible. Using the $35,000 we had budgeted for hose, nozzles and air bottles as a grant match has enabled us to secure over $100,000 of much needed replacement equipment. That is definitely a win-win situation."
