Making the 4th of July more pet friendly

As we inch closer to the City of Westminster's fireworks display distant pops, flashes, and screeches become more common as residents set off their own firework displays, all of which are illegal until July 3 rd, some illegal all together.

If there was a test to determine our pets level of anxiety it would be on the rise as we get closer to the 4th of July celebration.

Each year at this time Westminster Police respond to increased calls of "Dog at Large" and citizen complaints that their pets are cowering with fear because of the neighbors private firework show.

Pet owners are encouraged to start taking steps now to make this time of year a little less stressful for our furry friends. Familiarize yourself with your pets changing behavior as you start hearing or seeing fireworks.

Often pets can simply be kept indoors where they feel safe and have their favorite hiding place. If you have a pet that spends most of its time outside ensure they have proper shelter, preferably somewhere enclosed to get out of the environment. This is a good time of year to make sure their collar still fits and that they can be identified if they get out with either an ID or micro chip. This will help the police return your pet to you instead of taking it to a shelter.

If you are traveling over the Holiday plan ahead to see if you can take your pet with or look into leaving them with a licensed pet care facility. Many pet care locations will keep your pets overnight for a nominal charge. For pets that really struggle with fireworks check with your veterinarian for other possible options.

Due to large crowds at Westminster City Park and the concussion from the fireworks residents are discouraged from bringing their dogs to the park during the display. Dogs that are normally social and friendly can become scared and bite out of fear. If you must bring them, city ordinance requires they be kept on a leash.

Westminster Police and Fire departments will be working extra hours leading up to and through the Holiday to enforce firework ordinances. Information about what types of fireworks are legal and when they are allowed can be found on the City of Westminster website at: http://www.cityofwestminster.us/fire

If you plan ahead you and your pets will have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July celebration.
