International Auto Theft Conference comes to Westm

The Westminster Police Department is hosting the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators at the Westin Hotel August 10-14, 2009.

The International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI) was formed in 1952 in order to improve communication and coordination among the growing family of professional auto theft investigators. It has grown to over 4800 members representing over 35 countries and includes representatives of law enforcement agencies, as well as many others with a legitimate interest in auto theft investigation, prevention and education. The Colorado Auto Theft Investigators (CATI) was formed in 1973 by a group of Denver area auto theft detectives who observed that the cases they were investigating showed an

increased level of sophistication and organization. They were also aware that in order to properly investigate these cases, they would have to start exchanging information between agencies. These organizations recognize that, just as law enforcement agencies cannot successfully function independent of one another, auto theft investigation requires the active participation of the private sector; therefore, their membership also includes the insurance industry, automobile manufacturers, car rental companies, vehicle recovery technology companies and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

Currently we have 300 people registered to attend. They include 7 people from South Africa, 5 each from Canada and Australia and 1 each from Italy, Denmark, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The seminar is hosted by the Colorado Auto Theft Investigators Association which was established in 1974 and the Western Regional Chapter of IAATA. The attendees represent people from law enforcement, investigators from the insurance industry and representatives from private companies that manufacture and market products having to do with the detection, investigation and recovery of stolen motor vehicles and equipment.
