WESTMINSTER -- On May 3, the Taser Instructors from the Westminster Police Department were recognized with a Teams in Action Award for their role in department training of the M26 and X26 Taser.
The department's Taser instructors are responsible for certifying all new officers to carry a Taser, as well as providing annual recertification for all sworn police officers, and civilian Animal Management employees. Basic certification courses require a four hour class educating students on the fundamentals and use of the Taser followed by a written and practical test.
Annual recertification requires officers pass a written test and demonstrate proficiency using the Taser. In addition to training, the Taser Instructors are required to annually download data stored on the Taser's internal computer chip.
Data from each time the Taser was fired can then be used to defend the officer's actions from unfounded complaints, and hold officers accountable for misuse.
The Westminster Police Department currently has over 100 Tasers assigned to officers. Training, logging data, and maintaining these Tasers is a daunting task and requires a large commitment from the Instructors.
The Westminster Police Department Taser Instructors help ensure our officers are safe on the streets and accountable for their actions to dispute any unsubstantiated complaint.
