Westminster Police to crack down on seat belt laws
Contributed by: Westminster Police Department on 5/18/2006

WESTMINSTER -- On Monday, May 22, the Westminster Police will again join more than 39 law enforcement agencies in Colorado to educate and enforce Colorado's strict seat belt laws.

From Monday, May 22 through Sunday, June 4 Westminster Police will participate in the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) national "Click It or Ticket" Campaign. This is an extremely important campaign as it has the potential to change unsafe behaviors and save lives.

During the "Click it or Ticket" campaign, officers will conduct saturation patrols throughout Westminster to stop and ticket drivers who violate seatbelt safety laws. While the goal of the campaign is voluntary compliance and education, those who continue to violate seat belt laws will risk receiving a ticket.

Westminster Police hope that through participation in the "Click It or Ticket" Campaign, good habits will be reinforced and lives will be saved.

The Westminster police should remember that not wearing a seatbelt is a secondary offense. Pulling someone over for not wearing a seatbelt and then issuing a citation only for that is currently unlawful and no citizen should pay such a fine.
