Heat is on this weekend in Westminster
Contributed by: Westminster Police Department on 5/24/2006

WESTMINSTER -- Beginning Friday, May 26, Westminster Police Officers will conduct the first of many roving DUI checkpoints in conjunction with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and other Law enforcement Agencies across Colorado.

Checkpoints will be set up on highly traveled roadways in the City of Westminster throughout the summer months. The locations and times will not be disclosed, obviously attempting to prevent DUI drivers intentionally dodging law enforcement.

The first roving checkpoint will begin on May 26 at 9 p.m. and conclude at 2 a.m. on May 27. These times were selected because statistically, most DUI arrests are made between these hours. Checkpoint locations are highly traveled roadways with a high probability of apprehending drunk drivers.

Westminster Police are dedicated to impacting these important facts:

-- In 2005, eleven people were killed in traffic related incidents in Westminster.
-- Two (18%) of those eleven fatal accidents involved drivers under the influence of alcohol.
-- In 2005, 740 people were injured in 550 traffic accidents in Westminster.
-- 40 of those 550 injury accidents were alcohol related.

On May 14 2006, Chayce Miller and Alex Livesay died tragically at 92nd Avenue and Wadsworth Parkway in an alcohol related traffic accident.

Across Colorado, C-DOT sponsored DUI checkpoints in 2005 screened 35,000 drivers in 154 checkpoints across Colorado making 542 arrests for DUI, Child Abuse, drug related offenses, weapons charges and other violations. Those checkpoints brought together municipal, county and state law enforcement partners to protect our communities.
-- In 2004 in Colorado alone, there were 659 fatal traffic accident with 259 (39%) alcohol related.

-- In 2005 in Colorado alone, there were 604 fatal traffic accident with 204 (35%) alcohol related.

The minor traffic inconvenience incurred by motorists are minimal compared to the impact of lives lost. Cooperating patiently together, we can all make our communities safer.
