Candidate profile: Bob Briggs
Contributed by: Bob Briggs on 9/20/2007

Bob Briggs is running for Westminster City Council.

My name: Bob Briggs

Age: 69

My family: Shirley and I celebrated on September 8th our 50th Wedding Anniversary, we have know each other since I was in the 2nd grade at Westminster Elementary at 72nd and Lowell.

What I do: I am the President of a consulting firm called SB Inc. and the Executive Vice President of the Colorado Rail Association - a non-profit corporation promoting a multi-state rail passenger system using existing tracks for Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico.

My favorite place in town to hang out:The Westminster 66 mile plus trail system which is a part of the Open Space program.

What I like most about living here: My definition of Hometown is when you go to Costco and find people you know. Westminster has been my hometown since 1943 when my family moved this third generation Coloradoan to Westminster at 84th and Federal.

My interests and hobbies: I like to read and listen to books. My last book was on the Civil War written by Ulysses S. Grant. I have been involved in Bethel 18 of the Jobs Daughters supporting my Grand Daughter who is the Honored Queen. My wife and I are involved with the Westminster Presbyterian Church and Mariners. We also like to travel and garden.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Steak

People who inspired me (and how): Canadian Al Law who was born without arms - he drives a car and has a successful career. Roger Gudenkauf who got involved with School District 50 when there was a shooting at Ranum High School. He introduced me to Al. Because he (Roger) brings speakers like Al for the students of District 50 to get to know. He has made a difference for his community.

How I have contributed to the community: I had the opportunity to bring Front Range Airport to Adams County when I was an Adams County Commissioner. I started the process to create the shopping center - Shops at Walnut Creek by making the motion on the RTD Board to purchase the property occupied by a closed down greenhouse for the soon to be FasTracks Rail Station. I was the Charter President of the Westminster - District 50 Chamber of Commerce. I had the opportunity to be appointed by the Westminster City Council in 1987 to the first Open Space Advisory Board, that Board recommended to the City that we start what is now a 66 mile trail system. I fathered a son who became an Eagle Scout while I served the troop as Scoutmaster. I fathered a daughter who mothered two great grand kids. I married my Westminster High School Sweetheart who allowed me to do all of the above, run a business and be inducted, with her, into the Colorado Floriculture Hall of Fame for our contributions to the greenhouse industry.

What are the biggest issues facing your city now:Westminster has the opportunity with having the three FasTracks Rail Stations to re-invent itself. The Transit Oriented Development (TOD) that has and is taking place along the TREX rail project is amazing. That same thing will happen for all of the FasTrack stations including the three in Westminster. South Westminster, Westminster Mall and the Promenade will lead the way as Westminster moves into the rail transportation process. TOD will allow Westminster to create walking communities around each station with shops and restaurants.
