Candidate profile: Jane Fancher
Contributed by: Jane Fancher on 10/3/2007

My name: Jane Fancher

Age: 69

My family: I am a fourth generation Colorado native. I met my husband, Bob, when he was a 2nd Lt in the Air force. We have been married 44 years. We have 5 children: Don, Rich, Kelly, John and Ed and 8 grandchildren. We moved to Westminster when Bob retired from the Air Force and have lived in Westminster for 25 years.

What I do: I am retired and enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. Prior to retirement I worked as an accountant/systems accountant for the Minerals Management Service, Department of the Interior. I was also the President of an organization for responsible development that sought to keep the citizens informed of the happenings of the city while working toward the betterment of our city as a whole.

My favorite place in town to hang out: I love to hang out with family and friends where ever they may be.

What I like most about living here: The parks and open space and the warm, caring people that live here. The people are always ready with a smile, a hello and have a nice day.

My interests and hobbies: I am interested in all levels of government, city, county, state and federal. My hobbies include making jewelry, making Christmas ornaments and reading.

What is my favorite thing to cook: Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner with family.

People who inspired me (and how): Norman Vincent Peale because he had such sage advice, such as "how to stop worrying and start living." Winston Churchill who said "never, never, never, never quit."

How I have contributed to the community: I have been active with a local group organized for responsible development and served as it's President the last year. I organized many educational programs and forums that were open to the public including a forum on tax increment financing, eminent domain, a FasTracks forum with our RTD representatives, an identify theft program, an emergency preparedness program, and a meeting to give input to the Colorado Governor's Task Force on Health Insurance. I have taken the time to become informed on vital city issues by becoming a regular attendee at council meetings and study sessions. I have attended many board and commission meetings and attended the 2007 budget retreat after having read the entire proposed city budget. I am also a member of the Colorado Territorial Daughters and the Westminster Historical Society. When my children were at home I was active with Little League and scouting. I was also a hospital volunteer and blood drive chairman.

What are the biggest issues facing your city now: One of the cities biggest challenges will be maintaining our quality of life and excellent city services as we approach buildout and enter a weaker economic cycle. I don't think the city has done enough to help small business and has concentrated instead on business assistance to big business. We have many undeveloped parks that need to be built. We have an aging infrastructure that needs to be maintained or upgraded. There are two older fire stations that cannot accommodate new equipment because the buildings are too small. The Westminster Mall is approaching the end of its life cycle and needs to be redeveloped using new innovative methods that will draw shoppers from all over the city. We face the same problems of all cities: graffiti, traffic, snow removal, foreclosures and aging neighborhoods. We must find creative ways to address all of these challenges while continuing to fund services and stay within our budget.
