Sheriff Doug Darr announced the Adams County Sheriff's Office, Westminster Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol would be conducting two sobriety Checkpoint on May 25, 2007. The sobriety checkpoints will be held in the western portion of Adams County. The checkpoints will be roving but at least two hours will be dedicated for each location.
Sobriety checkpoints are used to detect intoxicated drivers and serves as a general deterrent to the motoring public that have knowledge of the operation. Every motorist who drives through a designated checkpoint location is asked to stop for a brief examination to determine his or her suitability to continue driving. Such contact usually takes less than one minute. Law enforcement officials throughout the county have found that most motorists support sobriety checkpoints as a valuable tool for the protection of the public from intoxicated drivers.
If it appears a driver may be intoxicated, a standard test of coordination is requested to determine whether a motorist's ability to drive is impaired. People who fail this sobriety test may be subject to arrest and the testing of their blood or breath for alcohol or drug contents.
The Adams County Sheriff's Office is one of many agencies in Colorado participating in the Colorado Transportation's summer campaign to crackdown on drunk driving.
Members of the media are invited to attend the checkpoints, which are scheduled to begin at approximately 9:00 p.m. I will provide you with the exact locations on May 25, 2007.
