Official report on U.S. 36 charter bus crash

On Friday, February 10, 2006 at 8:54am, Westminster Police, Fire and EMS responded to a rollover accident on westbound Hwy 36 between the 8Oth Ave overpass and Sheridan Blvd. The accident involved the following four vehicles:

-A 1999 Red Ford Escort, driven by Halley Isberg of Lakewood received minor damage to the driver's side rear quarter panel.
-A Coach USA passenger bus driven by John King of Burns, WY suffered driver's side damage.
-An International box truck driven by James Graves of Denver received damage to the box above the driver's side rear wheel, which also damaged the wheel.
-A UPS Delivery truck driven by Jeremy Wade was damaged on the front quarter panel and cargo box.

Fourteen people injured in the accident were transported to four area hospitals. Those injuries varied from bumps, scrapes and bruises to some broken bones. Thankfully injuries appear not to be life threatening at this time.

Vital Bullets:

º 16 non-injured people were transported from the scene to the Westminster Public Safety Center for shelter.
º 6 of the passenger on the bus were juveniles.
º DUI is not suspected in this accident.
º The bus did not leak fuel while overturned or while being righted.
º Ten ambulances transported the injured.
º Westbound Hwy 36 was closed between Federal and Sheridan Blvd.
º Hwy 36 re-opened at 12:05pm.
º The concrete center median was damaged during the accident.
º Including the driver, the Coach USA bus’s maximum capacity is 48.
º 32 passengers and the driver were riding on the bus at the time of the accident.
º The bus was traveling from Denver to Cheyenne via northern Colorado communities including Boulder.

The investigation into the cause of this accident is ongoing. That investigation will include review of witness statements, evaluation of evidence collected at the scene, mechanical inspection of the vehicles involved, reconstruction of the collision dynamics. Preliminary theories as to the accident cause and not being discussed. Charges will be determined only after the completion of that investigation.

The weather conditions may be considered during this investigation, but only so far as to evaluate whether the driver’s involved where operating their cars with due caution within those conditions. At the time of the accident, the roadway was wet, but not ice packed, but the shoulders were slushy. This accident is certainly a reminder to motorists of the dangerous possibilities when driving on any roadway during adverse weather conditions. Please plan ahead, slow down, and be patient with other motorists.
