Against the backdrop of Stanley Lake Regional Park, visitors were transported into the past with a demonstration by the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West during an open house held May 30.
The event also included presentations by HawkQuest and the Metro Dive Rescue Team.
The mission of the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West is to educate the public about the existence of the 9th and 10th United States Cavalry, regiments made up of African Americans.
"Buffalo soldiers" was the nickname given to the African American soldiers who served during the Civil War. In 1866, through an act of Congress, legislation was adopted to create six all African American army units. The units were the 9th and 10th cavalry and the 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st infantry regiments, according to www.buffalosoldiers-amwest.org.
