A simple road trip ends with Mr. Showmanship
Contributed by: Patsy Christy on 11/16/2007

I was invited to go to Las Vegas with my boyfriend and his roommate in 1975 so the roommate could pick up his children for the summer. I was sitting at the bar at the Hacienda and noticed that the man sitting next to me would order a drink, put a dollar in a shot glass and sign a register receipt. I was very naive about what he was doing so I asked him if he had to sign for the tips he was giving the bartender.

We struck up a conversation and he asked me if I had seen any shows. I explained that I had just come to Vegas for the ride. He asked me if I liked Liberace, and I told him that I absolutely loved him. He excused himself for a few minutes and when he returned he said he had gotten me and my boyfriend dinner show reservations for the next night. He said for us to go to the invited guests entrance at the showroom in the Hilton and give our name, and we would not have to pay for anything but tips. He even advised me as to how much we should give each person. He told me not to mention what he had done in case his wife came over because she hated when he did things like that.

When we got there the next night, we were wary, not quite believing this was for real, and we weren't sure that we were going to be turned away at the door. The host seated us six seats away from the stage. My boyfriend said the host that sat us had his hand behind his back to accept the tip, just like you see in the movies. We ordered dinner, and I even ordered a bottle of wine. I thought my boyfriend would be impressed that I could pronounce Cabernet Sauvignon.

Liberace's show was spectacular, and when he played with the dancing waters it was so beautiful that it made me cry. Liberace's elaborate sequenced costumes, huge diamond rings, and bejeweled cars and coach were magnificent. We were still nervous that we would get a bill at the end of the show, and I had a hundred dollar bill tucked away for emergencies. Neither one of us had a credit card so I was hoping I wouldn't have to take this bill out of moth balls.

At the end of the show the server brought us a bill and had my boyfriend sign it. He missed Liberace's encore where he flew across the stage in a purple caped costume. That night was heaven to me, as my wildest dream was realized. I had loved Liberace's music since I watched his t.v. show in the 1950-60's. His music gave me an appreciation of piano music, as well as classical music at a young age.

When we got back home we sent that man at the bar a thank you note so he would know how much we enjoyed the night. He had given me his business card, and I wanted him to know just what a terrific evening it was.
