My life of hits, runs and errors
Contributed by: Marge Schrader on 6/29/2007

Born and raised in St. Louis, Mo. I grew up cheering for the Cardinals and Stan Musial along with the American League's old St. Louis Browns. I can still remember my grandfather sitting with his ear practically glued to an old-fashioned radio (there was no television back then) listening to the play-by-play of broadcasters Dizzy Dean or Gabby Street as they announced what was happening on the field at Sportsman's Park. Heaven help anyone who interrupted Grandpa or tried to talk to him until that game was over!

After I married, my husband's company frequently transferred us to various other cities in the country, but our love of major league baseball never wavered and we became fans and rooted for whichever team represented our adopted city. In Kansas City we began cheering for The Kansas City Athletics (now the Oakland Athletics), but soon discovered that most of the people we met were football fans and couldn't care less about the great American pastime. We decided that if we were to have any friends at all, we had better get with the program and learn all about Lennie Dawson, Roger Staubach and Hank Stram's Kansas City Chiefs, but we continued to keep abreast of happenings in the baseball world. We always knew who was in first or last place and who had been traded to whom. We had two sons and naturally they played Little League and my husband coached. We had dreams of one day watching them play in the big leagues, but unfortunately that wasn't to be. But they have followed in our footsteps and have become lifelong fans of the sport.

We were living in the Phoenix area when the Arizona Diamondbacks were born back in 1998, and we quickly became gung-ho fans of this fledgling team so when they won the World Series in 200l at the age of three,we were ecstatic. It was Bob Brenley's first year as manager so this feat was especially sweet.

We relocated to Colorado almost two years ago, so now we're big fans of Matt Holiday, Todd Helton, Troy Tulowitzki and Clint Hurdle's Rockies. But we feel a special bond for the Diamondbacks - almost like a parent for a child since we were there from the beginning.

I can think of no better thrill than to be in a suite in beautiful Coors Field on September 30th surrounded by friends and family enjoying a major league baseball game watching my two favorite teams battle it out below. Imagine cheering for both teams at the same time! Whether the Arizona Diamondbacks win or the Colorado Rockies take home the prize that night, MY team will be the winner!
