Oh how long we waited for a major league team, the Nay-Sayers telling us that Colorado could not support such a team. Oh how wrong they were! The Fireworks Games have always been a big draw. As a life-long resident, my father whetted my imagination and my love for the game by taking us girls, along with our friends the Miller's, to the Fireworks Games at Bears Stadium for more years than I can reliably count.
Those games provided us with a wonderful evening out with friends and lots of fun memories. One such evening, as the Bears were warming up, little Ray asked "When do the [real] bears come on the field?" He was really expecting to see live bears come out to play baseball. There were exhibition games where the greats like Johnny Bench and the Cincinnati Reds came to play. What a treat!
The family tradition continues some 40 years later. With their birthdays in July, my boys & I still try to make at least one of the fireworks games every year. The Bears Stadium/Mile High was a wonderful place for minor league play, but can't compare to the Coors Field experience. My boys and I attended Zephyrs games and later Rockies games where they also learned the love of the game. I've passed the torch to the next generation, my twin grandsons and I got to see our first ever triple play last year! The excitement of last year's season is still fresh - although it has been tempered with the slow start & injuries of some of my favorites - and my co-worker is amazed that I am still a staunch lover of the Rockies!
Like so many other hopefuls, I tried and tried to get tickets for any of the playoff games, just to take my dad to one REALLY BIG game, it wasn't to be. As we age & life goes flying by, a day spent at the ball game with friends and family is always the best. What fun it would be to take Grandpa, the kids and grandkids to another game and share yet another great day surrounded by other fans watching the Great American Pastime!
