You don't need to leave Westminster to eat in
Guadalajara
. This unassuming restaurant located at 2835 W. 72nd Ave in Westminster (just east of Federal) provides a variety of foods we usually only find south of the border.
Last Monday, a snowy evening in Westminster, our family of four enjoyed the flavors of Mexico just down the street. The little restaurant, named Guadalajara, doesn't look as appealing from the outside as it does from the inside. The large mural on the wall of the Guadalajara Cathedral makes you feel like you are in the Centro Histórico Av 16 de Septiembre, Hidalgo y Morelos in downtown Guadalajara. Put a dollar in the jukebox, press any four digit number and you are entertained with a variety of Mexican tunes. Go ahead, try it!
For a fun and spicy meal try the Molcajete. This dish combines beef, chicken and shrimp in a hot and spicy sauce that is not for weak or mild eater. My husband, a native from Mexico, ate this up but did feel the heat. Lillian, our oldest daughter, enjoyed the Huachinango (Roasted Stripe Bass). Don't be alarmed when the fish arrives with the head on...this is typical Mexico. She described it as tender with a crispy skin...and very good. Olivia, the second daugther, enjoyed the Camarones Empanizado. These crispy shrimp, along with rice and beans and an ajiol sauce was just right. I had the Camarones al Mojo de Ajo (garlic shrimp) which was a delight.
We couldn't resist dessert in Guadalajara and ordered one Sopapilla and one Fried Ice Cream. I didn't think much of the Sopapilla which seemed like a fried tortilla but the kids gobbled down the Fried Ice Cream which was coated with a crunchy outside and topped with lots of whip cream.
Give yourself a Mexican immersion and visit Guadalajara for your next great eating vacation in town.
