P_ _ _ _ and joy
Contributed by: Amanda Thompson on 12/5/2006

Since I guess people are not allowed to say the word "peace" anymore, I decided to omit it from the title. The present hullaballoo around the hanging of a "peace wreath" on property here in Colorado is sending some major waves throughout. It's amazing how one simple word and statement can rub so many people differently. Hm.

Honestly, I think the Homeowner's Association that is boycotting this wreath is just petty. Honestly, it's a PEACE wreath. Had it been in the shape of the anarchy symbol, I think that would be a different story. However, considering it is the holiday season, I don't think anything was meant by it other than "peace and joy." How many holiday songs have the word "peace" in them? Should we omit all of those words because they may or may not offend veterans? It's ridiculous, quite honestly.

In addition, the fact that five members of this association were asked to "resign" over the fact that they did not find objection in this wreath is absolutely astounding -- they lost their job because they sided with the owners, not a cranky boss-man on a power trip and a few disgruntled neighbors. Does that sound like the actions of someone who is looking out for the "general welfare?" Not so much, in my opinion.

As for the gentleman (and/or the alleged "others")who was/were offended, all I can say is: get over it. It's a wreath. It's a peace sign. It's not a banner or a flag decrying the war. It's the season of peace, that's all it is, it's not a personal attack on yourself or your military history. Thanks for serving our country. Now hush. It's a bunch of pine needles twisted together. Is that really an important reason to fire five people and fine a couple $25 a day? Not really. Get off of your high horse and accept that this wreath does not center around you.

Sometimes I worry about how far we'll go to make people happy. You can't please everyone, so there's no point in making at least seven people suffer so one or two can sit down at night and say, "Well, at least there's no peace sign within five yards of us. Phew."

Happy holidays, everyone.

A lot of people feel very passionately about this issue. It's been decided, though, that the wreath is OK, and the town of Pagosa Springs is going to have a community peace-sign wreath. Very cool, if you ask me. Your story is very well argued. ... I used to work with an Amanda Thompson at the King Soopers in Parker ...
