I know I tend to write commentaries on things I read...but this one, I just could NOT pass up. In today's issue of the Rocky Mountain News, there was an article about religious protests at the funerals of soldiers who served in Iraq.
The catch is: the protestors were not protesting the war. The were marching with signs saying "Thank God for Dead Soldiers", "God Hates Your Tears", and other incomprehensible absolutely rude sayings. Why? Because the soldiers fought for a country that 'harbored gays'. Incredible.
When I read this this morning, I was incredbily infuriated. To show up at someone's funeral, someone who served this country that these protestors live in, and show such incredible disrespect is unfathomable. I understand standing up for what you believe in, but to show such disrespect to someone you have no association with, at a gathering where mourning is happening...I can't even explain the rage-all in the 'name of God.'
Jeff Eldridge
, a lawmaker from Virginia, is quoted as saying: "It's just inhuman for a group that says it's coming in the name of the Lord to protest at a funeral." I couldn't agree more.
The blatant hypocrisy by these protestors is incredible. If they detest America that much for 'harboring gays', then what's stopping them from leaving? They must have forgotten that the funerals at which they are "attending" are for human beings who lived lives. How would they feel if protestors showed up at their mass for teaching prayer? I think the main thing in this entire issue is respect-which obviously, these protestors lack.

This is difficult. I find nothing but revulsion at the nature of the protests described, but I wonder, is it s much different from protesters who spit in the face of returning Viet Nam Vets Many, including some in the media have sought to exploit, even under the pretext of honoring, our brave war dead. Disrespect toward our Nation's warriors is despicable in any case, but perhaps no more so in this context despite the apparent political correctness involved in supporting the target of these particular protesters. Perhaps the answer truly is “America, Love it or leave it" but in typical hypocrisy, I doubt the writer would ascribe such a solution to the media or other left wing peaceniks who disdain our military, living and dead, on any number of other more “PC” grounds. The real question, lurking below the surface here, seems to be “Whose ox is being gored?”.

Vincent Carroll, editor of the RMN editorial pages who writes the 'On Point' column, and George Will, a syndicated and Newsweek columnist (among others), both regularly use what they read in books, newpapers, academic journals and such as topics for their columns.
