Vote No on 2A & B, and Take Westminster Forward
We encourage a NO vote on Questions 2A and 2B on the City of Westminster ballot this fall. Your no vote helps move Westminster forward. These ballot issues are about whether or not to repeal the City Council’s prior land use decisions to allow redevelopment of a blighted shopping center at 72nd and Sheridan in an area that has long begged for revitalization.
This redevelopment was not forced by the City. Instead, it was the landowner who came forward with a proposal to revitalize and provide public improvements that area residents have requested for many years. In addition to the revitalization of the shopping center, the project will provide traffic improvements, erect a masonry wall on 72nd Avenue, and provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in landscape and streetscape improvements. The project also provides more than $1 million in revenue to the city for other key services that go directly toward maintaining Westminster as a great place to live, work and play.
Some residents offered valuable input and important concerns. Pages of notes were taken and hours of consideration given to how the concerns were being addressed. The Council felt like the impacts raised were mitigated sufficiently and that the entire project would meet many goals and requests of the community and provide for an improved Westminster. The owner of the land in question addressed the size of the development with a response that a site plan of smaller shops and specialty retailers was not financially feasible.
What happens if Questions 2A and 2B pass? The Council feels that the revitalization of the area may become stunted and that the center will remain in its current state for many years. Westminster has a strong history of being proactive with the development and investment community. The message sent by a yes vote may be that Westminster is not a place for enhancement, revitalization and high-quality improvements. We encourage a no vote on 2 A&B to keep your city moving ahead!
