Lakewood High School raises money for Darfur
Contributed by: Amanda Thompson on 4/20/2007

I rarely get the opportunity to talk about things that I'm really proud of. But, thankfully, this is one of those times!

Lakewood High School's Amnesty International and Friendship Bridge clubs put on comedy show featuring two Lakewood comedians to raise money for the Save Darfur Organization, and the Friendship Bridge Organization, two very worthy causes.

The Save Darfur proceeds totaled over eight hundred dollars, with all of the proceeds going to the organization. Half of that money will be used by the organization for resources, such as food, water, and clothing.

The other half will be used to boost awareness of the terrible genocide that is still going on. In Sudan, over 400,000 Sudanese have been killed and over two million have been displaced and are now refugees in neighboring Chad.

Friendship Bridge is an organization that helps to get women in Guatemala and Vietnam micro-loans to fund businesses, and scholarships for the education of their children. The Guatamalan women made bracelets, necklaces, and scarves, all of which were sold at the event.

All of that money will go towards the loans.

Brennan Andrews, the president of Lakewood's Amnesty International division, organized the event, with the comedians of the night being Joel Jolly and Dylan Wiberg. A third, Robbie Eyster, was slated to perform, but unfortunately was sick and could not attend.

Caitlin Arnold, president of the Friendship Bridgeclub at Lakewood, also helped to organize thegive-away portion of the evening, with the proceeds going to the Friendship Bridge organization.

These two causes are truly important, and deserve all of the publicity they can receive to get the help they need. If you would like more information about Save Darfur and the Save Darfur Organization, please go to www.savedarfur.org.
