Back to school blues ... again
Contributed by: Amanda Thompson on 8/12/2006

It's that miraculous time of the year again. Parents are all excited, kids are....not. It must be back to school time! Or, for the kids I know, it's "back to school even though summer technically counts" time. By that I don't mean summer school, but I mean summer homework. Especially for IB kids (International Baccalaureate Programme, which is basically Advanced Placement but harder and ... international ... (?).But anyway ... summer homework has been eating our minds for the last two months, so back to school means ... basically nothing other than seeing your friends in study groups instead of socially.

School, for us completely horrified IB students, means two things:
1. We actually have to complete homework and turn it in, instead of procrastinating and going by the honor system.
2. It's time to start studying for tests ... that we take in May.

Number one is pretty self-explanatory. IB students are the most crafty procrastinators on the face of the earth. Nowhere else will you find someone who can write, rehearse and memorize a 15-minute speech the night before it's due. It's pretty incredible.

Number two is mainly meant for IB juniors and seniors. As in, we take our IB tests (again, just like AP but generally longer ... and with more intimidating proctors). These tests count toward our "IB diploma" which makes us extra-special or something of the sort ... I think. I didn't read all the fine print. In order to get the diploma you haveto have "x" number of points, which you earn from taking tests and writing asinine essays. Fantastic practice for college, I might add. Anyway, now's about the time that all IB juniors and seniors are beginning to stress about the tests -- study schedules, teaching styles, study groups ... all the organization begins now. Which, on top of college applications, scholarships and the8,000 other things we have going on, makes for quite a big load.

Don't believe me? Check out www.ibscrewed.net to see the message boards of students crying over their IB Chemistry finals. It's pretty depressing.

Anyways, the point of this article was merely, to say before the school year started, to all IB students:

It could get worse. So when you can't think of a topic for your speech, just remember that nobody else can either. Remember, there arekids all over the world suffering with you. And isn't that the kind of encouragement we all need?

Happy school year, everybody.
