Real jail Vs. TV jail and how I ended up in prison
Contributed by: Anthony Utterback on 2/22/2006

Anthony Utterback is an inmate at the Adams County Detention Facility. He writes a column periodically for YourHub.com.

Real jail is very slow. In movies and television, you see a lot of action, fighting and beating up guards. Here in Adams County, we usually sit around and talk, watch TV, play board games or have a little bible study. We all wait around for our court dates, mail call and visits. Most inmates usually end up with a quick trip to the Adams County courthouse.

I ended up in jail because I was trying to portray a person I wasn’t. I was trying to fit in where I should have never wanted to fit in. I was accepted into groups of people by drugs, money and women. People ask themselves why would anyone want that type of lifestyle. I felt accepted into the world when really I was just a shy little outsider. I began to try new drugs and found myself taking to meth, speed, crank or should I say, the devil.

I also began selling drugs, writing and making checks and doing whatever I could to make sure I had drugs. I got into trouble with the law around 1999 and was sentenced to five years in a halfway house. I was doing real well until I met an old friend who was still into drugs, got high and left Colorado to go to North Carolina. I thought, a new state, a new life. Well, it turns out that I was going to be a daddy and I went to the police station and turned myself in. I was extradited back to Colorado, went back to court and was sentenced to six years in the Department of Corrections.

I went and did my time and was released to parole. I came back to Westminster and lived with my father. I did well for three months and again, I bumped into some old friends and got back into dope. I started to see my life dwindle to nothing again until I met my fiancé Steph and she is helping keep a sober mind while I’m in here.

I fear that I have a disease and I’ll never overcome but I’m going to give it my all. I have good friends, a wonderful fiancé, a great best friend, my father and two beautiful little girls that are giving me support and inspiration. I would like to thank all these people from the bottom of my heart.

If this column reaches or touches anyone, I really would love to hear from you. Also, once I get out of this mess, I want to help troubled youth or adults who also need help. I needed a mentor for along time and I turned to drugs. Some people turn to gangs. If you would like to contact me, you can write me at:
