Adolescent posture adjustment

TEENAGE POSTURE

Adolescence is perhaps the last period in which beneficial correction can be made in postural habits. The re-education of posture revolves around passive and active exercises. Contracted musculature can be treated with soft tissue techniques which involves passive stretching combined with gentle, specific trigger point work.

The motor strength of postural muscle groups can be enhanced by specific daily exercises designed to match the improving motor performance of various muscle groups. It is also important to correct any pelvic subluxation in the sagittal plane with exercise. A reduction in pelvic tilt will be reflected by a decrease in other spinal curves with a concomitant improvement in posture and gait.

About 3% to 4% of all adolescents are affected by a scoliotic curvature of the spine. A comprehensive approach to scoliosis is taken by chiropractors. Given the comparatively low incidence of scoliosis which progresses to require surgical intervention, it is appropriate for chiropractors to (1) screen adolescent patients, (2) identify contributing factors, including biomechanical, environmental, familial, and congenital, (3) to treat the patient to normalize spinal segmental mobility, muscle balance, and postural alignment and asses and treat other presenting complaints with my normal clinical framework, and (4) to manage and monitor the patient.
