SUMMER ACTIVITIES
PROPER PRECAUTIONS
Summertime is jam packed with fun and an endless variety of outdoor activities. Sometimes, however, enthusiasm for summer sports and general fitness activities can go beyond our body's physical limitation. In our zeal for better health, we can overdo exercise when the thermometer reaches between 90 and 100 degrees and above. Heat exhaustion, heat cramps or heat stroke can be the result.
You may bring on serious heat reactions if we have profuse sweating during strenuous exercise or manual work in a hot atmosphere. Such conditions are likely to happen to some people more than others - specifically, elderly persons, small children, chronic invalids, overweight people and alcoholics.
Preventive measures include plenty of water. Athletes, sports fans and manual laborers, especially should supplement excessive fluid loss. Drinks low in refined sugar are best. The sweeter the drink, the longer it remains in the stomach, and the longer it takes to replace the fluid lost from the body. Beer is not recommended.
If our body temperature builds and fatigue sets it, our coordination and decisions are impaired, inviting other types of injuries.
We enjoy our summer activities, but we are also aware of the proper precautions and we take them. With good judgment and Hot Weather Health Care, we continue to enjoy our favorite outdoor summertime activities.
