Walking to make a difference
Contributed by: Pastor Curtis L. Miller on 6/2/2006

I saw it with my own eyes and still could not believe it.

There on the screen was the frank, maybe even graphic account of young high school students who were sharing what they did for fun. I heard them say that they partied, vandalized, participated in sex and just did nothing. You can see this same video (with faces blurred) at VisionWalk2006.com

These were not young people in New York or Chicago, they were right here in Brighton, Colorado. My own city! Here were students who had nothing to do and no where to go. There was a sense that this was all that life holds. What else is there?

Well, in my view, there is plenty more!

I shared this video with the church that I Pastor, The Worship Center @ Brighton (theworshipcenter.cc) and saw in the eyes of the congregation the same passion to do something about it. We determined on that day to make a difference in the lives of the youth in our city. We rallied our collective passion to step up to the plate and hit a home run for youth.

There is a great need for a youth center in Brighton. A place where high school kids can come and hang out, play video games, do their home work, and enjoy being together. A safe environment where they can ask questions about life and get real answers. A setting that will increase their self worth and thus their worth to society.

We want to provide such a place!

We want to purchase a building in the center of Brighton that will be used for youth. It will be a place where kids can come and play pool, ping pong, video games and other activities. It will contain a caf and after school homework center with computers.

Concerts and youth services will be held in the auditorium as well as spiritual counseling provided. This youth facility will be a safe harbor in their lives where they can just hang out as well as learn to grow into young adults with meaning and purpose.

One of the things I am doing to help raise awareness and funds is to take a walk. Not just a normal walk but a walk that will take me from the steps of our church in Brighton, Colorado to Glenwood Springs Colorado --- a distance of 180 miles.

We are calling this walk "Vision Walk 2006". I start on Sunday, June 11 and plan on taking about ten days to walk through the mountains and end up in the hot springs of Glenwood Springs. It will be a walk that will be a challenge which is great, but not compared to the challenge that is before us to make a difference in the lives our youth.

Will you help me?

I need people who will support this walk in finances. You can be a part of the investment in youth in our city by mailing a check of any amount to us. Those funds will be put directly towards the procurement of a facility that will enrich the spiritual, social and physical lives of our youth.

For more information and updates on the walk you can go to our website: VisionWalk2006.com or call us at 303-659-5456. You can make your check out to Worship Center Vision Walk, 14650 Chamber Rd. Brighton, CO 80601.
