The Firefighter Combat Challenge lived up to its reputation as "the toughest two minutes in sports," as competitor after competitor were exhausted as workers from St. Anthony's North Hospital helped them shed their gear.
Some nearly collapsed at the end, others had to be treated for oxygen.
At least it wasn't sunny and in the 100s, as the clouds made for a humid day in the 70s at the Westminster Promenade parking lot on July 28.
Crews from Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska competed in the multi-task event.
First, the firefighter has to climb up five flights of stairs with hose on the shoulder. Then a weight has to be pulled by a rope from the ground up to the top flight. After going back down to the ground, the fighter has to knock a weight using a sledgehammer - simulating having to chop through a wall with an axe. After that comes aiming a hose at a target, before having to drag a dummy across the finish line.
