The i9 Sports spring flag football season in Broomfield wrapped up with many exciting tournament games. As it had been all spring, the weather was a bit spotty, with cool conditions at Columbine Meadows Park. The Broomfield league completed its season last weekend as 185 boys and girls played nine weeks of games, concluding with trophies, medals, and snacks for all participants. The divisions were named after characters from the movie Narnia, in honor of i9 Sports' partnership with the new Disney film.
The players braved the morning chill, which resulted in many very close games. The first title game was a thriller, as the Bearcats, coached by James Mower, beat the Panthers, led by Troy Mayemura, 26-24 to take the Reepicheeps (ages 6-7) Division. Also, the Dragons, coached by Joseph Madrill, downed Joe Iacovetta's Owls, 20-6, while April Udland's Gorillas, with their vocal cheering section, beat the Leopards, with Jeff Cordova at the helm, 48-12.
Next, the Giants, managed by Brent Gilbertson and Greg King, completed their strong season victoriously in the Pevencies (ages 8-9) Division with a 28-12 decision over the Hornets, who were coached by Brett Wagner. In addition, the Bobcats, coached by Jason Silk, took their final game, 32-16 over Dennis Helmick's Cougars, while sportsmanship won out in the game between the Rattlers, led by Shad Averhoff, and Tom Sweetman's Sharks, who agreed to an 18-18 tie.
In the Caspians (10-11) Division championship, the Wasps, with Mark Gorman coaching, stung the Bob Abeyta's Falcons, 32-24. Other games featured Brent Donahoo's Wildcats squeaking by the Cobras, coached by Steve Hammond, 22-18, and the Rhinos, coached by Kenny Wildenstein, downing Rod Owens' Bulldogs, 30-20.
The Spartans, with head coach Mike Hestera, had a big day to grab the Aslans (ages 12-14) crown by beating the Barracudas, coached by Dennis Heinrich, 40-6. Meantime, the Warriors, led by Ron Elston, just got by Sam Cardenas' Thunderhawks, 20-14.
In the meantime, a dozen talented youth cheerleaders worked hard all season to support their siblings on the field and entertain the families watching from the sidelines.
