In between this and my last written column, I have relocated into a new apartment.
To give you an idea of its age, the building is one of those older, brick, more duplex-like structures found primarily on the north side of Denver.
One dawn two weeks ago, I was sitting in my room on the floor (my bed hadn't arrived at that point) deciding whether or not to grab a drink from the fridge. Soon, I mustered up the energy and made my way into the kitchen.
I opened the refrigerator door, leaned in to grab a soda, and as I stood up regaining my posture, something instantly caught my eye. In my peripheral vision, there was a shadow of an object that hadn't been there before.
It was a cupboard door. I could see it had been swung almost completely open in between the short time I passed by it and entered the kitchen.
Instantaneously, chills raced like electric charges throughout my body. I paused. I waited. For what I don't know. I just stood in a fixed position, my soda still in hand numbing my fingers and palm.
Then, almost inadvertently, I moved towards the cupboard, which hung behind a corner.
Slow baby steps lead me towards what I was hoping was an empty hallway. When I peered around the corner, there was nothing to be found. The back door was open just as I left it, leaving the screen door the only matter between me and what could've been an intruder. But there was no way for anyone to enter. The door was locked. And honestly, I began to think to myself, "What kind of intruder comes in and simply opens a cupboard door? Is there such a thing as a practical jokester robber?" That just doesn't make a bit of sense.
So, I simply closed the cupboard, regarded the situation as merely a strong breeze coming in from outside and then slowly made my way back to the bedroom, carefully checking every corner as I did so.
Have you experienced something you couldn't explain? Something so metaphysical, so irrationally profound it will never escape your memory? Tell me about it.
The next instillation will be a little bit more creepy. If you find it too creepy to read, imagine experiencing it.
