Blog Entry 12 of 13 The Seth Files
My name is Seth and I am the community journalist for the Arvada/Wheat Ridge area. Instead of trying to narrow my blog down to a specific topic, I figure I might as well just wing it and see what happens. And since this is my first attempt ever at blogging, I hope you will take the plunge with me and start your own blog.

Controversy clouds vision for Olinger property
Contributed by: Seth Davis/YourHub.com staff   on 4/9/2008

This past week has produced a sad event and a bit of controversy for Wheat Ridge. Because we always encourage people to contribute their reactions to local current affairs, I figured I'd offer up a couple points of discussion for your community.

Wheat Ridge Fire Chief Jim Payne is in a medically induced coma as of April 9 after falling from a ladder while trimming a tree at his home April 5. Payne has been with the Wheat Ridge Fire Department for 14 years, and I'm sure he has touched many people's lives during his career. If you want to share any thoughts about Payne, or just let your wishes for him and his loved ones be known, you can register for free on YourHub.com and post your writing.

As for the controversial issue, Wheat Ridge City Council recently voted favorably on an amended zoning plan for the area that includes the Olinger mansion, which means the mansion is cleared to be demolished. The tentative plan is to use the land for mixed-use projects such as restaurants and businesses. Here's Wheat Ridge Mayor Jerry DiTullio's explanation of the city's vision for the Olinger property.

I spent some time with thewomen from the Wheat Ridge Historical Society a couple months ago, and they detailed how they were going to try to preserve the area. Now that the city council has voted for rezoning, the historical society is collecting signatures for a petition.

Whether you're excited about having more businesses come to the area or you would like to see the property stay as is, you can post your opinions here.

And if there's another issue you would like to discuss, possibly something that you feel isn't getting enough attention, you can always use YourHub.com to let your thoughts be known.

The news about Jim Payne really touched my heart. Last year while working for YourHub.com, I strolled into the Wheat Ridge Fire Department for information on a story I was writing. Jim was the first to greet me at the door, introduced himself and took the time to answer all of my questions. I was very impressed with how sincere and patient he was, and I'm thinking about him and his family through this difficult time. I hope that he has a speedy recovery.

Thanks, Seth. This is all important information people need to know. As for Olinger, that is an area landmark that deserves preservation. I have been to city council meetings in a few suburban cities and it always seems as though they are too quick and too ready to bulldoze history and replace it with commerce. Tax revenues are important, but so is heritage. Let's hope something good comes of the Olinger property.
