The Count and Countess presiding over the Carnation Festival are crowned at the Mayor's Reception the day before festivities begin. The royalty honor is accorded to Wheat Ridge residents to acknowledge their contributions to the community. This year's honorees are long-time citizen
Dorothy Archer
and Police Chief
Dan Brennan
. It was a cold December in the mid 90's when Dorothy Archer showed up on the doorstep of the neighbor whose wife had left him at Christmas with no money and two kids. Archer brought a large basket filled with food, cookies, candies and children's toys. The stunned man said later that she was a ray of light at his darkest time. He said "I don't know how she found out about my circumstances but I'll always be grateful".
In the 40 plus years that Dorothy Archer has lived in Wheat Ridge she has had a habit of doing that sort of thing on a fairly regular basis. A Colorado native, Archer grew up in a Victorian house at 32nd & Newton in northwest Denver. For 40 years she lived in the same neat, trim east side home. She still works nearly full time as a substitute teacher for Jeffco and Denver Public Schools, mostly at West High. While substitute teaching is not without it's challenges, Dorothy obviously embraces this as she has been doing it for 33 years, with ten years out for "raising kids".
In addition to her job, Dorothy is an Eucharistic Minister at Lutheran Medical Center, a long-time member of St. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and is deeply involved with Meals On Wheels, where she pioneered the Saturday delivery program which now serves upward of 1,000 grateful people each week. When asked what she thought about Wheat Ridge in 2008 from the perspective one who has lived here for the city's entire history, Dorothy said "I am very excited by the things that Mayor
DiTullio
and our City Council are doing for Wheat Ridge, like the 44th & Wadsworth development, the widening of 38 th from Kipling to Youngfield, and taking care of our drainage issues".
