The Wheat Ridge Police Department was honored with the prestigious Pioneer Policing Award at the annual awards Ceremony of the Colorado Association of Chief's of Police(CACP) this June. Presented by the CACP, the Pioneer Award honors a Colorado law enforcement agency for creating an innovative program, policy, or concept that is not knowingly in use anywhere else. This annual award was granted in recognition of the Communication and Response Strategies for Peer Counselors program that has been implemented at Wheat Ridge High School.
The Peer Counselors program was developed as a means to provide Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) style training to high school peer counselors and school staff. The program focuses on providing teens with the appropriate crisis intervention and de-escalation skills needed to be able to safely and effectively deal with mentally ill persons and/or individuals experiencing extreme emotions. The curriculum was modified from the rigorous CIT course which is a 40-hour pass/fail class that many law enforcement officers attend to help effectively respond to and handle incidents under similar conditions.
"The Communication and Response Strategies for Peer Counselors program is really a great asset to our community," said Wheat Ridge Chief of Police
Dan Brennan
. "For the Wheat Ridge Police Department to receive this award shows our continued commitment to excellence and community service."
The Peer Counselors program is the result of a team effort by the Wheat Ridge Police Department, Crisis Company, and Jefferson County Public Schools. The program has been so successful that other Jefferson County Schools and a school district in Houston, Texas is working with Wheat Ridge Police Commander
Joe Cassa
and other program team members to replicate the curriculum.
For more information about this innovative program please contact Commander Joe Cassa at 303.235.2933.
