Debbie Backus joined Jeffco Public Schools as the chief academic officer. Backus, who started July 3, replaces Sherida Peterson who retired.

In her new role Backus is responsible for supporting teachers and principals in increasing and maintaining high academic achievement. She will coordinate the work of the instructional division to boost graduation rates, as well as increase the rigor of courses so students are prepared to enter and finish college successfully.

Backus comes to Jeffco Public Schools from the Aurora School District where she worked for 21 years as an assistant principal, a principal and an Assistant Superintendent for Instruction. She earned her Bachelor's in Special Education at Boston College, her Masters in Reading at Harvard University and her Certificate of Advanced Studies in Urban School Leadership at Chicago State University.

"I hope to build on the strong foundation presently here," Backus said. "Jeffco Public Schools is a high performance school district where I can contribute as well as learn."

"Jeffco Schools has a proud tradition of continuous improvement," said Superintendent Cindy Stevenson. "We know our students need ever increasing skills and knowledge to be successful in the 21st century. Debbie Backus will bring us a new perspective and a new energy as we make a great school district even better for our children."
