The Wheat Ridge Fire Department, community members and many other fire departments from around the metro area gathered for a pancake breakfast on May 31 to support critically injured Wheat Ridge Fire Chief
James Payne
and his family.
The breakfast took place at the Wheat Ridge Fire Department Station No. 1, 3880 Upham Street. An estimated 1,500 people enjoyed pancakes, sausage and bacon and gave donations to help with Chief Payne's medical expenses.
Chief Payne was injured after a fall at his home on April 5 and remains in the ICU at the hospital.
Bill Cassel
, member of the Wheat Ridge Optimist Club, was busy flipping pancakes for the event.
"James is a member of the Optimist Club," Cassel said. "Club members decided to come out and help with breakfast, so the firefighters can do what they need to do."
Mike Herman
, member of the Chief Payne Fundraiser Committee, said he was pleased with the turnout at the breakfast.
"I wasn't expecting this many people," said Herman. "The fire department brotherhood is incredible when it comes to something like this."
Other activities at the breakfast included rides on an old fire truck, jump castles and a tour of a smoke house. A clown and a balloon artist were also on hand.
Fundraising festivities continued into the evening at the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center, 4005 Kipling St. The $20 admission, going directly to the Payne family, included food booths from local restaurants, a silent auction and prizes.
Herman said firefighters as far as New Mexico planned to attend the evening event.
People who would like to contribute to the James Payne Assistance Fund may send donations to the Wheat Ridge Fire District or stop by any branch of Wells Fargo Bank.
Checks are payable to The James Payne Assistance Fund, c/o Wheat Ridge Fire District, P.O. Box 507, Wheat Ridge CO, 80034.
