Living History "Camps" in the City

At the 2008 Front Range Rendezvous

Once again, Denver metro city dwellers can step back in time and "live" Colorado's rich history at the 2008 Front Range Rendezvous, this year in Wheat Ridge. From Saturday, June 21, through Sunday, June 22 nd living historians, Civil War reenactors, Mountain Men, Fur Trappers, and artisans and traders will bivouac in Fruitdale Park at 47 th and Miller.

This encampment will team with family friendly, interactive history lessons. There will be music, LOUD artillery fire, saber drills, and food.

Some of the participants include:

· The TallowRiver Trappers: the living history/shooting arm of the South Platte Valley Historical Society. Shooting, tomahawk and knife throwing, and fire starting contests add to the fun of the rendezvous;

· Case Hicks is a living Historian who lives in Lakewood and travels across this great country portraying the late President Theodore Roosevelt;

· The Buffalo Soldiers of the American West: African Americans have served proudly in every great American war. Over 200,000 African American servicemen fought bravely during the Civil War. In 1866 through an act of Congress, legislation was adopted to create six all African American army units. The Buffalo Soldiers of the American West began as the result of an oversight in the history of the West;

· 4th Texas Regimental Artillery: (1st Lt. John Reilly Memorial Battery) has been created to serve several functions including educating the public, providing a means for extending the careers of reenactors by providing a garrison style experience through reenacting, living history activities, displays, and providing a forum for studying historical artillery with an emphasis on the New Mexico Confederate Campaign (maintaining and performing safe artillery drill);

· Highline Silver Cornet Brass Band: In the late 19th century, brass bands abounded. Every town of any size, every company and schools, prisons, benevolent societies and other organizations had at least one. These bands were often called silver bands, cornet bands, silver cornet bands, even Sousa bands - but not often called brass bands. The Highline Silver Cornet Band is based in Denver, and are a five-piece band playing traditional instruments, including cornets, an alto horn, a vocal horn, and a tuba. They specialize in music of the late 19th Century;

· 4th U.S. Artillery Regimental Brass Band: providing a 19th century band concert experience, the concerts are about 2/3 music, augmented by explanations of the music, history, uniforms, social customs, and the life of the soldier musician. The 4th U.S. Artillery Regimental Brass Band performed for the film "Dances with Wolves";

· Northern Colorado Fife & Drum Corps has the mission to be a reminder of how America's Constitutional Republic form of limited government originated and what it stands for through colonial dress, marching and music, Through many appearances at patriotic events they hope to inspire Americans to learn about our heritage, to study our Constitution, and to exercise our inalienable rights freely.

The 2008 Front Range Rendezvous is being held to support the non-profit South Platte Valley Historical Society's efforts to accurately rebuild the Trappers Fort at Ft. Lupton, Colorado. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged.
