Wheat Ridge debuts coffee with a cop program
Contributed by: Lisa Stigall on 9/19/2008

How many times have you wanted to ask a question of a police officer but didn't feel the time or circumstances were right? An innovative program designed to provide citizens the opportunity to ask questions of police officers regarding crime, traffic, quality of life issues, or a host of other questions kicked off with the first session of Coffee with a Cop. The debut session took place on Sept. 15, between 9 and 11 a.m. at the Starbucks Coffee Shop in the Applewood Shopping Center in Wheat Ridge.

Chief Dan Brennan and Officer Kyle Eversole chatted with numerous citizens and local business owners that stopped by and were curious about the program. Topics of discussion varied from questions about the new Coffee with a Cop program to traffic issues, as well as comments on local youth programs and changes in the community. Several patrons just wanted to thank the police department for all they do for the community.

"We spoke with about twelve people in the two hours we were there," said crime prevention officer Kyle Eversole. "So many people thought this was a great idea and just wanted to thank us for our service as police officers. I think today was a great success."

"This new program gives the police department an opportunity to engage community members in a non-traditional police setting," said Chief Dan Brennan. "It provides a relaxed forum where different officers will be available to make that connection with citizens and local business owners alike and promote partnership within the community."

A Coffee with a Cop session has been scheduled at the Starbucks in the Applewood Shopping Center one morning each month for the rest of the year. Officers from different areas of the department will attend these sessions. If an officer cannot answer your question, they will work on getting an answer and follow-up with the citizen. The dates are Tuesday, Oct. 14th; Monday, Nov. 10th and Monday, Dec. 8th from each 9:00-11:00 a.m. Additional sessions will be scheduled at other locations throughout the city in the upcoming months as well.
