The students of the SWAT team (Students Working Against Tobacco) at Wheat Ridge High School went door to door today to inform the neighbors of the changes to expect this year in the community. Wheat Ridge High School has adopted a school policy that should prove to be a great tool to help pave the way for our students, teachers and families to become tobacco free!
The administration has adopted a new "No Tolerance Tobacco Policy. "Starting the first day of school for the 2007-08 year, what is now known as the smoking pit will be closed and there will no longer be a place for students to use tobacco without consequences. WRHS has been working with the Wheat Ridge Police Department to help keep our youth tobacco free! Today, the neighbors of the school were delivered an information sheet about this, as well as a magnet to post with the non-emergency phone number of the Wheat Ridge Police Department; 303-237-2220. They are encouraged to call the WRPD if they have any students on their property during school hours using tobacco. The WRPD will come and issue a citation to the students.
Nancy Mickelson
, the clinic aid at WRHS, is the SWAT program sponsor, and she runs the NOT program, whichis a 10-week class that teaches students how to quit tobacco. It runs weekly during school. This is sponsored and funded by the National Lung Association. Nancy said that at WRHS we believe that you are not a bad person because you use tobacco, you just have a bad habit and we want to help you quit! We are all about keeping the students in school, and using teaching methods for tobacco cessation with tools to help them quit, using suspension as a last resort. We have joined forces with the Jefferson Center for Mental Health. They will be providing night classes at WRHS to educate about tobacco knowledge and the dangers associated with tobacco use to the students who violate the No Tolerance Tobacco Policy.
To our community; please be advised that while attending any and all sporting or other events sponsored by WRHS, we will be asking patrons to please observe and practice the NoTolerance Tobacco Policy. This includes in the parking lots while waiting for your students in your cars and anywhere outside our buildings and property. Together we can help keep our students tobacco free!

My sister started smoking when she was in high school that was 12 years ago, now today she is still smoking. I think if therre was a program like this back then it would have been easier for her to stop smoking. Best of luck to all smokers otu therre! Hope one day you stop smoking!
