Nearly 550 Wheat Ridge parents and children from three area elementary schools participated in this year's International Walk to School Day Oct. 8.
An event to promote safe routes to school and encourage an active lifestyle in children, the walk and bike ride included breakfast for the kids, snacks for parents and an opportunity for locals to converse with neighbors and elected officials.
"I think the kids had fun," said
Ashley DePaulis
, youth and school liaison for LiveWell Colorado. "The weather was great. It was a good walk."
The three participating schools -- Pennington Elementary, Prospect Valley Elementary and Compass Montessori Elementary -- were each assisted by the Wheat Ridge Police Department as officers aided the abundance of participants by managing cross walks and directing traffic.
The Wheat Ridge and Arvada Fire Departments also participated by putting their fire trucks on display and also handed out treats for the arriving children.
"We'd like to make this not just an annual event," said
Wendy Moschetti
, fiscal and project manager for Civic Results, a consulting firm who has assisted with previous International Walk to School Days. "It would be great if even once a month kids rode or walked from the recreation center."
According to DePaulis, roughly 5,000 schools in all 50 states partake in the annual event geared toward emphasizing the physical, mental and environmental health benefits of walking and biking.
"We'd like this event to be more long term sustainable," she said.
Steve Stamps
, of Wheat Ridge, joined the walk to Compass Montessori with son,
Fox
, from the Wheat Ridge Recreation Center and commented on the importance of keeping children fit and healthy.
"Who wants fat kids?" he said.
Other fellow walkers included
Tracy Langworthy
and
Karen Adams
of the Wheat Ridge City Council as well as Colorado State Senator
Moe Keller
.
