Excellent police work nabs armed holdup man

On September 11, 2009, 2:57 a.m., while on routine patrol, Wheat Ridge Police Officer, Dave Piermattei observed an SUV parked in rear of the 7-11 store located in the 5000 block of Kipling Street, in Wheat Ridge. Officer Piermattei noticed there were plenty of empty parking spots in the front of the store, so he decided to investigate. As Officer Piermattei approached the vehicle, he noticed the rear license plate was covered and that the vehicle was still running. He recognized that a robbery was likely taking place inside the store.

As Officer Piermattei prepared to enter the store, Christopher Womack (31) of Louisiana, walked around to the back of the 7-11 building and toward the SUV. The officer stopped Womack and asked him questions until a cover officer arrived to assist.

Upon questioning the store clerk, officers learned that a man with a gun had just robbed the store. The description of the suspect's clothing matched those that Womack was wearing.

Officers took Womack into custody and found he was carrying a .22 caliber handgun.

"Although it's a daily occurrence on TV police dramas, an officer initiated arrest like this one is rare and exemplifies excellent police work," said Wheat Ridge Police Division Commander Jim Lorentz.

Womack was arrested on suspicion of Aggravated Robbery. He was transported to the Jefferson County Jail where he is being on a $25,000 bond. His next court date is scheduled for Monday, September 14, 2009 at 10:00 a.m.
