Hi, my name is
Brett Kelley
, I am 36 years old. I haven't been as lucky as most of my friends and am still single with no children, but hope someday to have a family. My background in Wheat Ridge dates back to birth where I was raised and went to Pennington through 4th grade. I have owned the home my father grew up in for the past 5+ years with my brother, who happens to be getting married next year so I aim to own the home solo. My parents now live in Silverthorne and love to ski. We get up there at least 40 times a year to ski with them, as it's always been our major family event.
I graduated from Pomona High School, coached and swam for North Jeffco swim team for 20 years, swam in college for the Mountaineers of West Virginia, and completed my B.S. in Behavioral Science (emphasis on Anthro & Psych) with a minor in Mathematics from Metropolitan State College. I wanted to be an Elementary School teacher, and only need to complete my student teaching (when the time comes).
Currently I am employed with CBS Outdoor (a branch of CBS we all know), and am an Account Rep for outdoor advertising. I've been here since Sept. 2006, and enjoying learning about advertising while meeting new people.
Some quick questions I've been asked to answer:
My favorite place in WR to hang out:
Recreation Center (esp outdoor pool). I love to swim! Second favorite is Sunrise/Sunset on 38th! I like it hotter than what they can provide, but they do it better than anyone.
What I like most about WR?
It is home to me. I lived 8 years in Arvada, a handful in Denver, and in West Virginia/Pittsburgh, PA for 5 years. Wheat Ridge has been home to me for 16 of my 36 years. I love the mature trees, the greenbelt, the memories, the people, and my neighbors are Downtown and Golden (city and foothills).
My interests & hobbies.
I love to swim and coach swimming. Haven't done the later in a few years, but it is the best. I love, love, love to ski. I raced since I was 5 and am still doing it (racing now as in being the first down the hill). I enjoy helping/volunteering. I am a Peak Steward for the 14ers Initiative and help out on the fourteen thousand foot peaks - keeping an eye on them and reporting the usage. I help friends with their political ambitions, and recently been involved on the local (WR) level. I enjoy keeping active and always learning. If you see me, I usually am in the middle of something....
My favorite thing to cook:
I love to cook, but as I've heard from others it's tough to cook for yourself. I love fresh produce. I love cheese even more. Salads are one of my all-time favorite meals. Answer: Salads!
People who inspire me:
My parents. I grew up hearing what wonderful people my parents were. They never heard it, at least I don't think they did, but I did, and my goal in life is that I act according to the Golden Rule and have people say and think the same about me. I love those who are genuine, and those who look at the positive. I also love those who can look at the most daunting challenges and overcome them enroute to their goals. The later reminds me much of my friend Willy. He has taught me these things and I am inspired by him. Others who inspire me have a relationship with God. My Mother raised me in the church (Catholic) and I strayed away for a long time. I've realized it is a place where I can find peace and a place that centers me.
How I have contributed to the community:
My Dad and 6 of his friends showed up for the 2007 Carnation Festival in their sparkling Corvettes. Originally they were there to put Kelley for Council on their cars. But I wanted to help the parade and other dignitaries out, so let them chauffeur others at the head of the parade. I also coordinated GoFast to hand out energy drinks at the Thursday portion of the Carnation Festival. I did some other misc things for this event. I've also been involved in the DIRT committee (drainage, infrastructure, roads, trails) from Feb-May 2007. I have attended a Rotary meeting and understand their contribution to the community, have planned to meet with the Optimists, met with WR 2020, and have sat down with past and current council members and business owners in WR to understand where we've been, and where we are going (or would like to go). I was also the first to cannonball off the board when Anderson outdoor pool opened (I was 10 and it was a long-awaited opening).
The biggest issue facing Wheat Ridge now:
There are many, beginning with getting Cabela's done and filling the surrounding retail space in this high traffic (revenue) area. It's the Wadsworth corridor (widening plans). It is trying to figure out how to keep Wheat Ridge's historical places and country feeling (as it was when I grew up) while planning for revitalization. We need to review how to bring new businesses to our busiest corridors, and spruce them up so they are appealing and inviting. These obviously are Wadsworth and Kipling, 44th and 38th. I also believe we should aid in the safety of the elderly and children who wish to access all of Wheat Ridge through pedestrian bridges above/below these large corridors. WR offers many amenities in parks rec, and we need to safely connect these to offer what many other cities already offer.
I am running for office because I enjoy learning about what the citizens want. I am interested in becoming their voice. I am interested in making WR the best city in the world. I want WR to be an example of how to live simply but offer much. We are almost there because those who built WR decided to keep it simple. I am for simplicity. I am for the people, especially the seniors who along with my Grandmother built this wonderful city. I am for the kids and families, to help encourage programs that aid in their growth physically and mentally.
