George Pond: city council candidate
Contributed by: George Pond on 10/9/2007

My name: George Pond
My age: 41
my family: My wife Jill and I have lived in Wheat Ridge for over two years. We left Northwest Denver in search of a bigger house, and fell in love with Wheat Ridge.
Education: I have a Master's of Architecture and a Master's of Landscape Architecture, both from University of Colorado at Denver, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Kenyon College.
What I do: I am the Vice President of the Planning & Capital Projects Department of the Denver Zoo, assisting in the oversight and execution of the Zoo's Millennium Master Plan. I am active working with diverse stakeholders in realizing the redevelopment of the zoo and it's exhibits. I am especially interested in the infrastructure design, the development of water conservation efforts within the existing zoo campus, and the sustainable design efforts of the zoo's Master Plan projects. I am also a senior instructor in the Landscape Architecture department at the University of Colorado at Denver.
My favorite place in town to hang out: I love the open space areas that Wheat Ridge has to offer; favorites include the Clear Creek trail and Crown Hill.
What I like most about living here: The unique opportunity to live in a community with small town ethic in the middle of a large metro area.
My interests and hobbies: I enjoy most of the outdoor activities that Colorado has to offer; hiking with my wife and dog, fly fishing, camping and snow-shoeing are among my favorites.
My favorite thing to cook: Green Chili.
People who inspire me (and how): I am inspired by my boss and mentor, Craig Piper, the zoo's COO. He has an incredible work ethic, a brilliant mind for the big picture without sacrificing the details, and a true passion for the conservation of our environment.
How I have contributed to the community: I recently made Wheat Ridge a part of my teaching at the University of Colorado by facilitating a design studio course that focused on design ideas for the redevelopment of 38th Avenue.
My wife and I were just approved for an HIP loan with Wheat Ridge 2020, and we plan to continue to improve our home and our neighborhood.
The biggest issues facing Wheat Ridge now: Continuing forward with the Revitalization of Wheat Ridge in a fair and collaborative manner. It is important to protect the essence of Wheat Ridge while implementing new ideas and plans.
Why I am running: I'm running because I feel strongly about being active in my community and helping my District 1 neighbors participate in the revitalization of Wheat Ridge. I have the skills, the experience, and the passion to be of service to my neighbors.
